Visit Concerto - Amsterdam

Concerto is the Amsterdam record shop people mean when they talk about “the right vibe.” Open since 1955 on Utrechtsestraat, it has grown into five connected storefronts where you can lose an afternoon flipping through new and used LPs, talk shop with staff who actually listen, catch an in-store performance, and then sit down for coffee in the café. The shop’s own history notes that founder Gijs Molenaar started here in ’55 and that Concerto became a byword for music lovers; today it’s still on the same street, open seven days a week.

Why visit from overseas? Because Concerto feels like a living archive of European record culture: a deep, broad selection across genres (pop, jazz, classical, electronic, reggae, and more), bins that reward patient digs, and a layout that invites long, unhurried browsing. The city’s official guide calls it the oldest record shop in Amsterdam and a must for serious collectors; it also highlights the regular live sets and that post-dig espresso.

The place has stood the test of format wars and trends. Features over the years, from interviews with management to travel pieces by DJs, underline how Concerto kept its identity while adapting to new eras of listening. More recently, readers of the Financial Times singled it out among the world’s best record stores, praising both the selection and the coffee.

Practical notes if you’re planning a visit: it’s central (Utrechtsestraat 52–60), easy to reach by tram or on foot, and the opening hours are generous (daily, with earlier start times on special days like Record Store Day). Expect multiple rooms, genre-specialist sections, and plenty of staff recommendations, exactly the kind of shop where you leave with something you didn’t know you needed.

And when you get those records home, think about long-term care as much as the thrill of the find: store records upright, plan your record storage with room to grow, use inner/outer sleeves, and label sections so you can organize vinyl and rediscover it faster.
